the uniform
Looking at the uniform to determine some information.
-
The belt looks like a 1914 leather 'Walking Out Belt'.
-
The cane is a 'Walking Out Stick' which would suggest Sargent, rather than a Private.
-
The 3 bands on the sleeve suggest the rank of Sargent, the hatching pattern was worn down for the field to make it harder for the enemy to determine rank, making them more of a sniper target.
-
The pleats on the pockets suggest this was an early uniform - war economy meant later uniforms did not have this.
William was captured by the enemy between the 21st and the 26th of March 1918, during the “Kaiserschlact”- the last-ditched attempt to win the war before the Americans arrived in strength. The Germans very nearly succeeded too!

The Germans attacked in strength all the way along the line, smashed through the British and French lines, leading General Haig to issue his “Backs to The Wall” dispatch.
